Our Worship Service

What is worship? According to Nelson's Bible dictionary:
WORSHIP
Reverent devotion and allegiance pledged to God; the rituals or ceremonies by which this
reverence is expressed. The English word worship comes from the Old English word
worthship, a word which denotes the worthiness of the one receiving the special honor or
devotion.

So how do we go about expressing our devotion and allegiance to God? What rituals or
ceremonies do we follow? Well, quite simply, anytime we have a question, the answer should
come from only one place, God's word, the Bible. So we look to the Bible for what our
worship should consist of. Since we are a New Testament church, under the New Covenant
paid for by the blood of Christ, we base our worship on the teachings, and the examples of the
early church found in the New Testament.
Our worship service consists of six main events each Sunday:
The Apostle Paul wrote in the book of Colossians:
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all
wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to
God. Colossians 3:16 NIV
And he wrote to the Ephesians:
Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your
heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ Ephesians 5:19-20 NIV
Our singing is congregational, which means everyone in the congregation is invited to join in.
We also sing in a style known as Acapella, which means that we sing without the aid of any
musical instruments.
Our worship service always includes prayer. Prayer is our communication to God, and we will
typically pray at the opening of our service, during communion, and to close the service. Our
prayers consist of thanksgiving to God, petitions to God, adoration of God. We encourage an
active prayer life of all believers for that is the time that we come before God and speak to him.
Jesus' brother James wrote:
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. James 5:16 NIV
Each service we study a portion of God's word. Our sermons are designed to instruct, inspire,
and encourage a deeper relationship with God. It is our prayer that you will gain something
from each lesson presented.
Each service the Lord's Supper, also known as communion, is offered. During this most
reverent time, we partake in the bread and the fruit of the vine. We do this to remember the
sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for us by going to the cross. The Lord's Supper was
practiced by the early church, and we continue that practice. The Apostle Paul reminded the
Corinthian church of the establishment of the Lord's Supper when he wrote:
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he
was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my
body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he
took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you
drink it, in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup , you
proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 NIV
Now about the collection for God's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On
the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with
his income 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 NIV
In keeping with the instructions and practices of the New Testament, each week we lay aside a
portion of what God has blessed us with to be used for the ministries of the church.
At the conclusion of each sermon, an invitation will be offered. This is to invite and encourage
anyone who may feel the desire to become a Christian, or anyone needing special prayer.
We hope that you will come and spend some time with us in worship. Our desire is to draw
closer to God through our worship, and to build one another up in order to carry the good
news of Jesus Christ to a world that so badly needs to hear the message.
